A truck transporting roughly one million bees crashed on a busy stretch of interstate, releasing a massive swarm into traffic that had come to a complete standstill behind the accident.
The incident occurred on April 17 along Interstate 40 in Knoxville, Tennessee, where commercial bee transport is a routine part of supporting large-scale agriculture and pollination across the country. When the pickup truck overturned, the hives were compromised, allowing thousands of bees to escape and quickly spread across the surrounding area.
Traffic was immediately halted, leaving drivers trapped in their vehicles as the swarm moved through the highway. Officials warned motorists not to exit their cars under any circumstances, as doing so could lead to multiple stings and potential danger.
Mark Nagi, a spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, provided updates throughout the situation, describing the truck as completely destroyed while noting that the bees were still actively swarming. Images from the scene showed individuals in full protective beekeeping gear working to contain the situation.
Emergency responders and professional beekeepers were brought in to manage the swarm and recover as many bees as possible. Despite the scale and intensity of the incident, authorities later confirmed that the bees were successfully cleared from the area.
No injuries were reported, and traffic resumed once the highway was deemed safe.
