A 77-year-old volunteer teacher in Alabama was arrested after police said he repeatedly struck a young student during an argument involving Pokémon cards.
Officers were called to Jerry Lee Faine Elementary School in Dothan on August 31 after receiving reports of an altercation between a volunteer teacher and a student under the age of 10.
Police identified the volunteer as Oscar Truitt Jr. Investigators said the confrontation began over Pokémon cards, although authorities have not explained exactly what sparked the dispute.
School resource officers responded to the incident, and investigators later reviewed surveillance footage from the school. Police said the video showed Truitt striking the child several times.
Truitt was arrested on a harassment charge and booked into Dothan City Jail.
Dothan Police Chief William E. Benny said student safety remains the department’s top priority in local schools.
Authorities have not disclosed which Pokémon cards were involved or how many cards were part of the dispute.
