An 85-year-old Florida man has been arrested after deputies say he was caught driving more than 100 mph in a late-night street racing incident while smoking a cigarillo.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, William Bosworth was stopped on June 12 in Leesburg after a deputy observed two sports cars allegedly racing near U.S. Highway 27 and County Road 33 around 11:40 p.m.
Investigators said a red Corvette was recorded traveling at 125 mph, while Bosworth’s gray Nissan sports car was clocked at approximately 110 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Body camera footage showed Bosworth denying that he was racing. He told deputies the Corvette driver had swerved toward him and claimed he accelerated to avoid a potential collision. He also explained that he was simply out “having a little ride” in his favorite car.
Authorities charged Bosworth with racing on a highway and dangerous excessive speeding. Deputies said he cooperated during the arrest.
The Corvette driver, identified as 57-year-old Philip Signorino, was also arrested. Both men denied racing or knowing each other, although deputies noted that Signorino allegedly referred to his Corvette as “the one that won.”
Both drivers now face charges related to highway racing and excessive speeding.
