AI Makes Engineers Faster, Says DoorDash CEO

Tony Xu says AI is boosting productivity at DoorDash, but it hasn’t changed the company’s workforce structure yet.

The CEO revealed that nearly two-thirds of DoorDash’s code is now written by AI, helping teams ship products faster. But unlike many tech leaders linking AI to layoffs, Xu said speed alone doesn’t determine how teams should be organized.

Instead, DoorDash is prioritizing two things first: moving every team onto a unified tech stack and making all employees, not just engineers, AI-capable.

“We’re shipping more code,” Xu said, “but the real question is whether we’re delivering better outcomes for customers.”

His comments stand out as other tech companies increasingly cite AI as a reason for cutting jobs. Recent layoffs at companies like Atlassian and Coinbase have both been tied to AI-driven efficiency gains.
