AI-powered companion toys are rapidly gaining popularity in China, offering interactive features similar to classic Tamagotchi toys — including growing from an egg into adulthood, chatting with users, and responding emotionally.

As artificial intelligence becomes more embedded in everyday life, companion technologies are moving beyond screens and into physical products. These toys are designed to simulate relationships, blending entertainment with emotional interaction.

One of the most popular examples is a palm-sized device called Sweekar, which develops through life stages and requires regular interaction. Like early digital pets, it can fail if neglected, but unlike older versions, it communicates using AI, adapts to user behavior, and continues activities even when the owner is offline.

Once fully grown, the toy becomes self-sustaining and can simulate body warmth, breathing patterns, and emotional responses. Its personality evolves based on conversations, and users can customize its appearance.

According to China Daily, Chinese companies accounted for about 80% of exhibitors at CES 2026, highlighting the growing global interest in AI companions. Online marketplace Taobao reported year-over-year sales growth of more than 1,600% for AI toys, while JD.com said sales reached 700 million yuan ($100 million).

Analysts say the appeal lies in combining emotional support with emerging technology, attracting both younger users and older consumers seeking companionship.

However, critics warn that increased reliance on AI companions could affect real-world relationships, with concerns raised by cultural figures and religious leaders about the long-term social impact.
