Apple has stepped up its push into AI hardware by acquiring Israeli startup Q.ai, as competition intensifies with Meta and Google. The deal gives Apple new capabilities in audio and machine learning, particularly technology that helps devices interpret whispered speech and improve sound in noisy environments.
According to Reuters, Q.ai’s technology is already being integrated into Apple’s ecosystem, including AirPods features like live translation. The startup has also developed systems that detect subtle facial muscle movements, which could enhance future versions of Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
The Financial Times reports the acquisition is worth nearly $2 billion, making it one of Apple’s largest deals ever. Q.ai’s founders and engineering team will join Apple, marking CEO Aviad Maizels’ second company sold to the tech giant after PrimeSense in 2013.
