A small granite rock known as “Portable” has been returned to the climbing community in Squamish, British Columbia, months after its sudden disappearance sparked what locals jokingly called a rock kidnapping.

Weighing around 32 kilograms (70 pounds), the stone had long been a familiar feature at a popular bouldering spot, where climbers used it to practice balance and grip. Its disappearance last fall left many in the community puzzled, as the rock was widely recognized and considered part of the area’s climbing culture.

Nicknamed for its manageable size and distinctive shape, Portable had become a lighthearted but beloved challenge for local climbers. One climber, Ethan Salvo, said the reaction to its disappearance was genuine disbelief, as such a small object had taken on outsized importance within the community.

The mystery was eventually solved when Salvo spotted a photo online while on a climbing trip in Bishop. The image showed the missing rock near a campsite, wearing a Canadian drinking toque, goggles, and a hat. After a friend confirmed the sighting, Portable was recovered and brought back to Squamish, ending months of speculation and returning a quirky piece of climbing folklore to its original home.
