Chinese Bullet Train Hits Record 497 MPH in 5.3 Seconds

An experimental Chinese maglev train has set a new world record after accelerating from a standstill to 497 mph (800 km/h) in just 5.3 seconds.


The 1.1-ton vehicle completed the test on a one-kilometer track at Donghu Laboratory in China’s Hubei province. It also demonstrated its braking capabilities, coming to a controlled stop over approximately 200 meters.


The record applies specifically to short-distance maglev acceleration. Unlike conventional trains, maglev vehicles use magnetic forces to levitate above the track, eliminating wheel friction. Electromagnetic propulsion then drives the vehicle forward at extremely high speeds.


The experimental train has reportedly broken its own acceleration record three times in six months. Previous tests reached roughly 650 km/h, 700 km/h, and 798 km/h as researchers continued improving the system.


Despite the achievement, the technology is not ready for passenger service. The vehicle is primarily a research platform for testing electromagnetic propulsion, high-powered energy systems, levitation controls, positioning, and emergency braking.


The infrastructure also requires extraordinary precision, with track deviations reportedly limited to just 0.5 millimeters. Construction costs, energy consumption, safety requirements, and maintaining that precision across long distances remain significant challenges.


For comparison, China’s fastest commercial high-speed trains currently operate at around 217 mph, while Japan’s commercial bullet trains run below 200 mph.


Researchers believe the technology could eventually contribute to ultra-high-speed transportation, while related systems could also have applications in launching rockets and fighter jets.
