The Walt Disney Company has decided to keep ESPN within the company for now, shelving earlier talks of a potential spinoff following the appointment of CEO Josh D’Amaro.
According to reports, Disney believes ESPN still plays a key role in its shift toward streaming, making it more valuable inside the company than as a separate entity. While the idea of a spinoff isn’t completely off the table long term, it’s currently not under active consideration.
Instead of a full separation, Disney may explore selling minority stakes in ESPN, similar to its recent deal with the NFL.
Once a major profit engine, ESPN’s importance has declined alongside the fall of traditional cable. However, it remains one of the strongest assets in the pay TV ecosystem and a central piece of Disney’s digital strategy, especially as the company invests in building a direct-to-consumer streaming model.
For now, ESPN stays — but the option to spin it off in the future is still open.
