The Freedom Ship is a proposed $16 billion floating city designed to permanently house up to 80,000 people on the open ocean. If built, the vessel would stretch nearly a mile in length, making it one of the largest ships ever constructed and larger than many of the world's most recognizable structures.
Unlike traditional cruise ships that focus on vacations, the Freedom Ship is intended to function as a self-contained community where people can live, work, study, and retire. Plans include residential neighborhoods, schools, colleges, hospitals, shopping centers, sports facilities, parks, entertainment venues, and public gathering spaces.
Project leaders envision the ship carrying approximately 50,000 permanent residents, 10,000 tourists, and 20,000 crew members. The vessel would remain primarily in international waters and continuously travel around the globe, potentially completing a full circumnavigation every two to three years.
To support such a large population, the concept includes a range of self-sufficiency features, including renewable energy systems, rainwater collection, wind turbines, solar panels, advanced food production technologies, and other sustainability-focused infrastructure.
The project is being led by Freedom Cruise Line CEO Roger Gooch and a team of international partners. While supporters believe the concept could redefine ocean living, the ship remains in the planning stage and would require more than $16 billion in funding before construction could begin. If realized, it would represent one of the most ambitious maritime engineering projects ever attempted.
