Grok is facing another major investigation, this time from the European Union, over the spread of AI-generated sexual images.
The European Commission announced it has opened a formal probe into X to assess whether content created by Elon Musk’s AI chatbot violated EU law, including the possible circulation of illegal material. As part of the move, regulators are also expanding an existing investigation into X’s recommendation algorithms, which had already led to a €140 million fine over what the Commission described as misleading blue checkmarks.
Earlier this month, X said it had introduced technical safeguards to prevent Grok from editing images of real people into sexually explicit or revealing content, following widespread backlash.
However, regulators remain unconvinced, citing continued reports that such images were still being generated after the changes.
xAI did not directly address the new investigation when contacted. The EU probe follows similar actions in the US and UK, as well as temporary bans on Grok in countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Elon Musk has said that users who create illegal content with Grok will face the same consequences as those who upload illegal material directly.
