Apple Vision Pro has been used in cataract surgery for the first time, marking a major step for spatial computing in healthcare.

The procedure was carried out by Eric Rosenberg at SightMD, using a mixed reality platform called ScopeXR, which he helped develop. The first surgery took place in October 2025, followed by hundreds more using the same setup.

For the first time, a surgeon used a spatial computing headset as the primary visualization tool during the operation. Through ScopeXR, Rosenberg could see the surgical field in 3D while accessing real-time patient data and overlays—all without breaking sterile conditions.

The system integrates with existing tools like the Ngenuity 3D Visualization System, streaming live visuals directly into the headset.

Beyond visualization, the platform enables remote collaboration, allowing other specialists to join surgeries virtually, view the same data, and communicate in real time. It’s also being used for training, giving students access to live procedures without needing to be physically present.

According to Rosenberg, the goal is not just to introduce a new device, but to redefine the operating room—making surgeries safer, more connected, and more accessible worldwide.
