YouTubers known for exposing scammers have been praised by federal prosecutors after helping investigators dismantle a $65 million fraud ring that targeted thousands of elderly Americans.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California announced that Hua Wang, the alleged leader of the scheme, pleaded guilty on June 30 for his role in a multinational fraud and money laundering operation. Ten other defendants have also pleaded guilty.

According to prosecutors, the network had been operating since at least 2019 alongside scam call centers based in India. Victims were allegedly tricked by callers posing as tech support agents, government officials, or bank employees before being convinced to mail cash to addresses linked to fake identities and short-term rental properties.

Wang admitted responsibility for more than 2,000 cash packages worth roughly $64 million.

A key breakthrough came from YouTubers Scammer Payback and Trilogy Media, who conducted undercover sting operations against scammers in 2020 and 2021. Their videos helped investigators identify suspects and better understand how the fraud network operated.

In one operation, Scammer Payback creator Pierogi and Trilogy Media delivered a decoy package to a suspected money mule, who later admitted on camera to receiving cash packages in exchange for payment. The footage was later shared with law enforcement, who used it alongside rental records and other evidence to identify members of the conspiracy.

When the charges were first announced in 2025, U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon credited the creators' efforts, saying, "Not all heroes wear capes. Some have YouTube channels."

More than 30 people have now been charged in connection with the investigation, with additional sentencing hearings scheduled throughout the coming months.
