Ferrari’s first fully electric car has sold for $40 million at a charity auction, setting a new record for the highest price ever paid for a brand-new vehicle at auction.

The Ferrari Luce, unveiled in May 2026, sold for more than 35 times its standard price during an RM Sotheby’s auction in California. The vehicle was the first production example of Ferrari’s debut EV and was developed with input from former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive.

The one-off Luce features a unique white finish, custom wheels, special brakes, and several bespoke details created specifically for the winning bidder.

All $40 million from the sale will go to the Ferrari Foundation to support educational programs. The auction surpassed the previous record held by a custom Ferrari Daytona SP3, which sold for $26 million in 2025.

Ferrari’s move into electric vehicles has been controversial among some longtime fans, with critics arguing that the five-seat EV represents a major departure from the company’s traditional identity.

Despite the backlash, demand appears strong. Ferrari has reportedly already reached its 2026 sales target for the Luce, with particularly high interest coming from China.

The $40 million sale is a record for a new vehicle, though it remains far below the overall auction record of $142 million paid for a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé in 2022.
