France summons Elon Musk over abuse and deepfake claims

Elon Musk has been summoned by French investigators over alleged misconduct on X, including the spread of child exploitation material and deepfakes.

Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino are expected to appear for voluntary questioning, while other staff will testify as witnesses. It’s unclear whether either will attend.

Prosecutors are also examining whether controversy around Grok — including explicit deepfake content — was intentionally amplified to boost the valuation of xAI and X ahead of a planned 2026 market listing tied to SpaceX. French authorities raised these concerns with the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Justice Department declined to assist, accusing France of using legal pressure to interfere with a U.S. business. Musk reacted on X, saying, “This needs to stop.”

Separately, Grok faced backlash after a viral French post falsely framed Auschwitz gas chambers as disinfection facilities — a claim linked to Holocaust denial — before later correcting itself and acknowledging historical evidence.

Meanwhile, Reporters Without Borders filed a complaint in Paris, accusing X of allowing widespread disinformation to circulate despite repeated warnings.
