Google is giving engineers across the company access to Anthropic’s Claude for coding, marking a notable shift from its previous focus on using Gemini internally.
Employees can now use Anthropic’s Opus 5 model for internal development through Antigravity, Google’s internal development platform. Access comes with per-user quotas and is intended to supplement, rather than replace, Gemini.
Previously, Claude was largely limited to select teams, including parts of Google DeepMind and certain high-priority engineering projects.
The move highlights growing competition in AI coding tools. Despite investing heavily in Gemini, Google is allowing engineers to use a rival model when it can help improve productivity.
Google is also a major investor in Anthropic and has announced plans to invest up to $40 billion in the company.
A Google spokesperson said Gemini remains the company’s primary model for internal development, while third-party models such as Claude are available for specialized use cases.
