GTA 6 is already shaping up to be one of Rockstar’s most detailed games yet, and much of that detail will extend to the NPCs populating its world.

According to The New York Times, Rockstar says GTA 6 includes more than 600,000 NPC animations. By comparison, GTA 5 featured around 55,000, while Red Dead Redemption 2 had roughly 300,000.

The huge increase is designed to make pedestrians feel more individual and believable. NPCs are expected to move, react, and behave differently depending on who they are and where they are in the world.

Rockstar reportedly dedicated an entire Los Angeles office to developing NPC behavior for the game.

The goal is to avoid crowds that simply repeat the same actions. People at the beach, on the street, or inside buildings will have different routines and personalities, with some potentially reacting aggressively if threatened.

Rockstar has also improved how NPCs remember and respond to events around them. In GTA 5, an NPC might drop an object and immediately forget about it. In GTA 6, characters are designed to retain awareness of those interactions, helping the world feel more persistent.

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut said the studio has paid attention to even the smallest environmental details, including where characters sit, what they drink, photographs on walls, tattoos, and signs of their personal lives.

The result is intended to make Leonida feel less like a collection of randomly generated pedestrians and more like a world filled with people who appear to have their own lives, routines, and histories.
