Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is emerging as one of the first tech leaders to propose tokens as a new recruiting tool, signaling a shift in how companies compete for top engineering talent.

Speaking at the GTC conference, Huang suggested that in the near future, engineers won’t just ask about salary or equity, but also about how many tokens come with the job.

He said Nvidia engineers could earn base salaries of a few hundred thousand dollars, with additional tokens worth up to half that amount—effectively boosting their productivity through access to AI compute.

Tokens, which represent units of AI processing power, are becoming a key economic resource in the industry. Since AI systems rely on tokens to read and generate text, more tokens mean more capability, making them increasingly valuable for engineers building AI-driven products.

Huang’s comments highlight a broader shift across Silicon Valley, where companies are beginning to treat AI compute as a “fourth component” of compensation alongside salary, bonuses, and equity.

As demand for inference power grows, some investors and industry leaders believe token budgets could soon become a standard part of job offers, with candidates actively comparing them during hiring.

The idea reflects a growing reality: access to AI resources may soon matter as much as pay itself in determining an engineer’s output and impact.
