Judge Blocks Pentagon Move on Anthropic Risk

A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Pentagon from effectively blacklisting Anthropic, handing the AI company a significant legal victory.

US District Judge Rita Lin granted a preliminary injunction that halts a directive ordering federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s technology, along with a formal designation labeling the company a “supply chain risk.” The designation is now paused and cannot take effect while the injunction remains in place.

The ruling gives Anthropic and its CEO Dario Amodei crucial breathing room as they challenge the government’s actions, which the company argues could have cost it billions in lost business, particularly with defense contractors.

At the same time, the Pentagon has already moved ahead with OpenAI following failed negotiations with Anthropic and is expected to continue exploring partnerships with other AI providers.

Judge Lin also raised concerns during the case that the government’s actions may have been intended to pressure or punish the company rather than strictly address national security risks, a point that has drawn wider attention across the tech sector.

The case is now being closely watched, as it could set a major precedent for how far the US government can go in restricting AI companies and shaping the competitive landscape of the industry.
