Como, Italy, is introducing a ban on bicycles and e-bikes in parts of its city centre after Mayor Alessandro Rapinese was struck by a cyclist earlier this year.
The incident happened in June as Rapinese was leaving a meeting focused on traffic restrictions. Although the mayor said he was not seriously injured and did not require hospital treatment, he later cited the experience as one reason behind the new measure.
Under the rules, which are expected to take effect in September, cyclists will be required to dismount and walk their bikes through designated areas of the city centre. The restriction applies to both traditional bicycles and electric bikes.
Rapinese said the decision was based on concerns about pedestrian safety and information gathered following the collision. The cyclist involved in the incident has reportedly not been identified.
The move has drawn criticism from local cyclists, some of whom argue that a single incident should not result in broader restrictions for everyone. Protests against the measure are reportedly being planned.
People who violate the ban could initially receive a warning and may also face fines.
