A young child is in critical but stable condition after being thrown into a crocodile enclosure at a zoo and attacked by one of the animals, while police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder.

The incident occurred at Johnsons of Old Hurst, a licensed zoo and reptile center that houses Nile crocodiles, caimans, and alligators behind secure barriers and elevated walkways.

Authorities say a 30-year-old man allegedly picked up a toddler and threw him into the enclosure. The child was reportedly bitten by at least one crocodile before being rescued by Tracey Johnson, whose family owns the zoo.

Speaking after the incident, wildlife experts praised Johnson’s actions, describing her as exceptionally brave for entering the enclosure to save the child.

Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of attempted murder. Investigators believe he had no connection to the boy. The man, who was visiting the zoo with carers, was later released on bail after being deemed unfit for interview.

The child remains in hospital, where specialist officers are supporting his family as the investigation continues.
