A man who thought he was getting rid of a fake Rolex ended up in a legal case after the watch turned out to be genuine.
24-year-old Deepak Singh brought what he believed was a counterfeit Rolex into a Singapore watch shop and traded it for three real Rolex watches instead of cash. The deal, worth around $71,000, quickly fell apart when authorities stepped in.
He was arrested at Changi Airport shortly after the exchange, with all three watches recovered. At the time, the original watch was assumed to be fake.
But in a twist, a Rolex service technician later confirmed the watch was authentic.
The case was treated as an “impossible attempt,” meaning Singh intended to commit fraud, even though the scam couldn’t actually succeed because the watch was real.
Despite the unusual circumstances, the court ruled that his intent was enough, and he was sentenced to seven months in jail.
