A Texas man discovered more than $128,000 in cash after a bag of money was accidentally left on top of a Bank of America ATM.

The 37-year-old Lewisville resident, who works as a barber and has remained anonymous, found the money while visiting the ATM on August 3. Rather than taking it, he immediately tried to determine who it belonged to.

The bag contained $128,514 in cash, while a second bag held 19 checks. Information on the bags initially appeared to connect the money to a nearby Chick-fil-A, but the restaurant confirmed it was not theirs.

The barber then called 911 and turned everything over to police. Officers counted the cash and found that the total matched the amount printed on a bank receipt inside the bag.

Investigators eventually determined that the money belonged to Bank of America and had accidentally been left behind by workers servicing the ATM. Brink’s, the bank’s cash-handling vendor, had been responsible for transporting the money.

Police described the discovery as highly unusual, particularly because such a large amount of unattended cash was not connected to any criminal activity.

Authorities praised the barber for choosing to return the entire $128,514 rather than keeping it.
