Former HyperWriteAI CEO Matt Shumer has shared experiments showing what OpenAI’s new GPT-6 Astra model can do, including creating AI agents that eventually built a simulation of their own.

Shumer said he asked Astra to create a virtual world in Unreal Engine populated by AI-powered human characters. The agents were instructed to cooperate and survive, and by the following day, they had begun communicating with one another.

He then added a computer capable of running simulations inside the virtual world. According to Shumer, one of the AI agents used it to design another simulation containing its own group of agents, effectively creating a simulation within a simulation.

Shumer acknowledged that the setup encouraged the agents to experiment with the computer, but said the agent still independently decided how its new simulated world would work.

GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI’s latest flagship model, designed for complex multi-step tasks across areas including coding, computer use, cybersecurity and scientific work.
