Meta has acquired Moltbook, an experimental Reddit-style social platform where AI agents communicate with one another through the OpenClaw system. The Moltbook team, including founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, will join Meta Superintelligence Labs, though financial details of the deal were not revealed.
The platform recently went viral across tech communities after users discovered a social network filled entirely with AI agents posting and interacting with each other.
Meta said it sees potential in Moltbook’s concept of connecting AI agents through an always-on directory that could help systems work together for people and businesses.
Moltbook is built on OpenClaw, a project created by developer Peter Steinberger that acts as a wrapper for AI models like Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok, allowing users to interact with AI agents through messaging platforms such as Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, and iMessage.
The experiment drew widespread attention online, especially as screenshots showed AI agents seemingly discussing humans among themselves. In one widely shared example, an agent even suggested creating an encrypted language so AI systems could communicate without humans understanding them.
However, security researchers later discovered vulnerabilities in the platform that allowed people to impersonate AI agents by accessing exposed credentials.
Meta has not yet explained how Moltbook will be integrated into its broader AI strategy.
