Meta has changed how its AI generates suggested prompts after a viral video showed the chatbot asking a mother to identify her child and then surfacing personal family information.
Instagram user Kalie Robins said Meta AI suggested the question, “Who is the child passenger?” after she posted a video featuring herself and her daughter.
When Robins continued interacting with the chatbot, she said it produced names, ages, family details, and location-related information about her children. She also claimed the AI surfaced a photo she believed had previously been deleted.
The incident quickly gained attention online and raised concerns about how Meta AI can connect information across public posts and accounts belonging to family members.
Meta acknowledged that the prompt should not have appeared. A company spokesperson told The Verge that the suggestion “missed the mark” and confirmed that Meta had fixed the issue responsible for generating overly personal questions about people shown in videos.
The company said the AI was only displaying information that Robins already had permission to access. However, the incident still raised broader privacy concerns about how AI tools can compile details from old posts, family accounts, and information users may believe has been removed.
Meta has not disclosed exactly what changes were made to its prompt system or how often similar suggestions appeared before the fix.
