A mayor in southern Mexico has once again taken part in a centuries-old ceremony by symbolically marrying a female caiman, a tradition locals believe brings prosperity and good fortune to the community.
The annual event was held on June 30 in the town of San Pedro Huamelula, Oaxaca, where the caiman, named Ana Cintia Ramirez Ahumada, was dressed in a white bridal gown and paraded through the streets during celebrations featuring music, dancing, and cultural performances.
The ritual, which dates back more than 230 years, symbolizes the historic union of two Indigenous communities and commemorates a legendary marriage that is said to have ended a long-standing conflict.
As part of the tradition, the caiman wears several ceremonial outfits throughout the festivities before the mayor completes the symbolic wedding with a kiss.
Although the ceremony frequently attracts attention online for its unusual nature, residents regard it as an important cultural tradition believed to promote abundant harvests, successful fishing, and harmony within the community.
