Elon Musk said Tesla is preparing to raise the price of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscription as the software continues to improve, warning that the current $99-per-month fee will not stay the same for long.
In an early Friday post on X, the Tesla CEO said the supervised version of FSD will become more expensive as its capabilities advance. He added that the real jump in value will come once the system reaches unsupervised driving, where passengers could safely use their phones or even sleep for the entire trip.
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system is an advanced driver-assistance technology designed to eventually allow vehicles to operate without human intervention. While the system still requires driver supervision today, Musk has repeatedly said future updates will significantly expand its autonomy.
Alongside the subscription option, Tesla currently offers a one-time $8,000 purchase for FSD, according to listings on its website. However, Musk confirmed that this outright purchase option will be removed starting February 14, leaving subscriptions as the primary way to access the software.
Musk’s comments came in response to discussion around Tesla discontinuing its Autopilot service in the US. Autopilot currently includes features such as Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and basic lane assistance, which have long served as Tesla’s entry-level driver-assistance tools.
