A mysterious floating island that suddenly appeared in a Canadian reservoir has vanished just weeks later, leaving locals wondering where it went.

The unusual landmass was spotted in British Columbia’s Williston Reservoir in late July. Covered in trees and vegetation, it quickly caught the attention of fishermen and nearby residents who said they had never seen it before.

The island was estimated to cover around 9,800 square metres and was large enough to be visible in satellite images, ruling out speculation that photos of it had been digitally generated.

But by August 5, the island could no longer be seen.

Bob Gammer told CBC that updated images showed the object had disappeared, although that does not necessarily mean it sank. He suggested it may have drifted back toward a sheltered section of shoreline.

The strange appearance and disappearance quickly spread across social media, where users compared the floating island to fictional locations from shows and video games.

Despite the attention, the exact reason it appeared and where it moved remains unclear.

B.C. Hydro is reportedly continuing to watch the reservoir in case the floating island appears again.
