OpenAI has announced it is shutting down its viral video app Sora, ending both its consumer app and API as it shifts focus toward robotics and core AI priorities. The company said its research team will now concentrate on “world simulation” to develop systems that can handle real-world physical tasks, marking a clear pivot away from generative video.

Sora had quickly gained popularity after its 2025 launch, reaching the top of app charts and attracting millions of users with its ability to generate cinematic videos from simple text prompts.

However, rapid growth brought major challenges, including high computing costs and ongoing issues around intellectual property, as users created content involving protected characters and real figures.

Internally, the project’s economics were described as unsustainable, reinforcing the decision to step back. The move also reflects a broader shift within OpenAI as it prioritizes scalable products and revenue ahead of a potential IPO, with leadership emphasizing focus over experimental projects.

Despite early partnerships, including a major deal with Disney, OpenAI is now pulling away from the AI video space, signaling that the next phase of competition may center less on creative tools and more on real-world applications like robotics.
