OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT advertising to Brazil and Mexico as it accelerates efforts to turn its massive user base into a major advertising business.
The rollout, scheduled for the coming week, adds the two countries to a growing list of markets where ChatGPT ads are already available, including the US, Canada, UK, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. The expansion comes shortly after ChatGPT reached 1 billion active users.
OpenAI is also experimenting with new ad formats. Free and Go users are beginning to see product carousels featuring multiple items from a single advertiser, while advertisers can now optimize campaigns around specific conversions such as purchases or sign-ups.
The company has also added integrations with adtech firms Hightouch and Triple Whale to improve campaign measurement and tracking.
Another format OpenAI appears to be exploring is “sponsored agents.” Its updated advertising policies describe these as conversational experiences where users can interact with an AI-generated representative for a company, product, or service.
The rapid rollout signals how important advertising is becoming to OpenAI’s business strategy. The company reported $100 million in annual recurring ad revenue in May, leaving significant room to grow compared with advertising giants Google and Meta.
For now, ads remain limited to ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans, while paid tiers such as Plus and Pro remain ad-free.
