OpenAI Finds a Weak Spot in Anthropic’s AI Lead

OpenAI still trails Anthropic in a closely watched measure of business AI adoption, but new data suggests Sam Altman’s company may have an edge in one important area.

According to Ramp’s AI Index, Anthropic’s most advanced model, Fable 5, generated only about 75% as much business spending as OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol in July. The figures suggest OpenAI’s flagship model is seeing stronger demand among businesses, even as Anthropic maintains its overall lead in enterprise AI adoption.

The weaker spending on Anthropic’s premium model could also point to businesses becoming more cautious about paying for the most expensive AI products.

Ramp bases its AI Index on bills and expense data from more than 70,000 US business customers. While the sample represents only a fraction of US companies and tends to skew toward smaller businesses, the index provides insight into how companies are spending across competing AI platforms.
