OpenAI is introducing a new support package for employees dealing with ICE detention or Border Patrol inspections.

The initiative is aimed at staff directly affected by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or prolonged secondary inspections by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), including cases involving immediate family members.

The resources include up to $15,000 in reimbursed expenses related to immigration enforcement situations, covering legal fees, meals, lodging, and transportation. Employees will also receive expedited referrals to immigration attorneys and access to a guide for navigating complex cases, including help locating detained individuals and finding low-cost or pro bono counsel.

An OpenAI spokesperson said the company regularly reviews its benefits to reflect workforce needs and updated its immigration-related support accordingly. The company did not disclose how many employees might use the resources.

The move follows internal discussions about federal immigration enforcement after CEO Sam Altman told staff that ICE “is going too far.” In a late January Slack message, Altman raised concerns about recent enforcement actions, which have drawn national scrutiny and protests, particularly in Minneapolis.

He also said that loving the country includes pushing back against perceived government overreach.
