OpenAI has entered into a new agreement allowing the US Department of Defense to use its AI models, CEO Sam Altman announced late Friday.

The development comes just hours after the Pentagon cut ties with rival Anthropic, following concerns about how its AI technology could be deployed in surveillance systems and autonomous weapons programs.

In a further escalation, the Department of Defense is now moving to designate Anthropic as a supply chain risk.

Such a classification could significantly complicate the startup’s relationships with other US-based companies and potentially limit its access to government-linked contracts and partnerships.
