OpenAI has teased a new hardware device built for users of its AI coding assistant, Codex. Called the Codex Micro, the compact gadget was developed in partnership with Montreal-based keyboard maker Work Louder and is scheduled to be unveiled on July 15.

A teaser video shared by OpenAI shows a small keyboard-like device illuminated with colorful lights before revealing the OpenAI and Work Louder logos. The company described it as an upgrade for "your favorite Codex shortcuts," while an OpenAI spokesperson said the device is designed to help users get more out of Codex.

The Codex Micro closely resembles Work Louder's existing Creator Micro 2 shortcut keyboard, featuring a similar layout and joystick but with OpenAI branding. The teaser also includes the unfinished phrase "You can just…," likely referencing Codex's slogan, "You can just build things."

Visitors to the AI Engineer World's Fair were given an early look at the device, with attendees sharing photos online. OpenAI developer experience engineer Dominik Kundel said working on hardware takes much longer than software, adding that he was excited to finally see the project revealed.

Despite the hardware announcement, this is not the much-anticipated AI device OpenAI is developing with former Apple designer Jony Ive. That separate product is still expected to be unveiled later this year, according to OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar.
