OpenAI’s New Dots Agent System Is Already Causing Confusion

OpenAI has unveiled Dots, a new fleet of always-on AI agents designed to continue working on projects even after users close their chats. But shortly after the announcement, the name itself became a source of confusion online.

OpenAI introduced Dots at its DevDay event, showing the agents as colorful cartoon-like avatars. The system is designed to handle ongoing tasks and workflows with greater independence.

The problem is that “Dots” is already associated with several other businesses. Two Chinese AI companies use similar names, including RedNote’s Dots Studio. Another company filed a US trademark application for DOTS covering AI chatbot and personal-assistant software.

There is also a women’s fashion retailer called Dots. After OpenAI’s announcement, users flooded its Instagram page with comments, with some joking that the company could make a fortune selling its domain.

The confusion became even more unusual because dot.com currently redirects visitors to a download page for SpaceXAI’s Grok Bot, a competing AI agent system.

That sparked speculation online that Elon Musk’s company had deliberately acquired the domain to troll OpenAI. One post highlighting the coincidence attracted more than 3 million views.

However, domain records show dot.com’s ownership was updated on July 28, months before OpenAI publicly unveiled Dots. SpaceXAI has not explained why it acquired the domain.

The naming collision adds another unusual chapter to the ongoing rivalry between OpenAI and Elon Musk’s AI operations, while leaving OpenAI with a new product that may be surprisingly difficult for users to search for online.
