Record-Breaking Sale
The very first Birkin bag, crafted by the iconic French luxury brand Hermes for the beloved celebrity Jane Birkin, just sold for a jaw-dropping 10 million dollars. at a Sotheby's auction in Paris on Thursday, shattering previous records for handbag sales. This modern design classic, which belonged to a prominent handbag collector based in Paris, ignited a fierce bidding war over the phone that climbed to 7 million euros. Ultimately, the final sale price reached 8.58 million, including commissions and fees, as confirmed on Sotheby's website. Before this, the record for the highest price paid for a handbag at auction was held by a stunning crocodile skin Hermes Kelly 28, adorned with diamonds and white gold, which sold for nearly 513,000 dollars in 2021 at Christie's in Hong Kong. "After weeks of excitement, the bidding kicked off at 1 million euros, which drew gasps from the audience," Sotheby's shared in a statement. They had predicted that this Birkin prototype would break records. The eye-popping price aligns perfectly with the fashion industry's recent trend towards more extravagant styles. After a long period where "quiet luxury" reigned supreme on the runways, designers have recently shifted gears, embracing bolder, more flamboyant looks that some trend watchers have dubbed "boom boom." As of now, the identity of the buyer remains a mystery.
Fashion Legend
This original Birkin has changed hands twice since Jane Birkin auctioned it off in 1994, with the proceeds going to an AIDS charity, according to Sotheby's. The seller on Thursday, Catherine Benier, who runs a boutique in the upscale 6th district of Paris's Left Bank, told The New York Times before the auction that this bag was the "crown jewel of my collection." The story behind the creation of the bag has become a modern fashion legend. During a flight from Paris to London, the late singer and actress Jane Birkin expressed her frustration to a fellow passenger about her struggle to find a bag that met her needs as a young mother. That fellow traveler was none other than Jean-Louis Dumas, the head of Hermes at the time. Their conversation led to the creation of a spacious tote designed to hold baby bottles, which debuted in 1984 and was named the Birkin. It is engraved with the initials J.B. and has several unique features, including closed metal rings, a non-detachable shoulder strap, and a built-in nail clipper. Its condition "reflects the many years of use by the actress and singer," Sotheby's said beforehand. A slightly differently sized version of the original has become the flagship product of the immensely profitable family-owned luxury French leather goods maker ever since. Produced in minimal numbers, the bag has maintained an aura of exclusivity and is beloved by celebrities from Khloe Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, and Victoria Beckham.
