Reddit is giving AI moderator-like powers with a new system that can automatically flag or remove posts and comments that violate subreddit rules.
The platform has long relied on volunteer moderators alongside its Automoderator (Automod) tool, which enforces rules based on keywords and predefined patterns. More recently, Reddit introduced AI-powered Post Check, which warns users if a draft may break community rules, but doesn't stop it from being published.
Now, as first reported by The Verge, Reddit is rolling out Rules Hub, an AI moderation system that uses large language models to determine whether a post or comment violates the intent of a subreddit’s rules, rather than simply matching specific keywords.
According to Reddit, this allows the system to better understand natural language, context, and edge cases that traditional keyword-based moderation can miss.
Moderators remain in control of how the tool is used. They can choose which rules the AI enforces and whether flagged content should be reported for review, removed automatically, or ignored.
Rules Hub has been tested for several months across more than 700 communities by both new and experienced moderators. The optional feature is now available for all newly created subreddits, with a broader rollout planned later in 2026.
Early feedback has been mixed. Some moderators said the tool works well in certain cases, while others said they trust it only to flag content rather than remove it automatically.
Reddit says the new system could eventually handle many of the moderation tasks currently managed by Automod, while human moderators will continue writing community rules, configuring the AI, and reviewing its decisions.
