Reddit is exploring new verification methods to ensure users are human and reduce its growing bot and spam problem.
Speaking to TBPN, CEO Steve Huffman said some AI tools, like translation and writing assistance, are now unavoidable, calling it “the world we live in.” However, he emphasized that Reddit may need stronger human verification to protect the platform, adding, “Reddit is for humans. That is our product.”
Huffman outlined potential options, including lighter methods like Face ID or Touch ID, which require physical interaction, as well as heavier approaches like ID checks already used in some regions.
The idea sparked mixed reactions. Co-founder Alexis Ohanian noted that while action is needed against bots, convincing users to accept face scanning could be difficult.
Users also expressed concerns, with some joking it would push them to “real-life lurking,” while others warned it could drive away the remaining human users entirely.
