OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says his company has a fundamentally different view from rival Anthropic when it comes to regulating artificial intelligence.
In an interview with POLITICO’s Decoded, Altman argued that society may need to accept some negative consequences in exchange for the broader benefits of AI and keeping the technology widely accessible.
“We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency,” Altman said when asked how his views differ from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
Anthropic has traditionally pushed for stronger AI regulation, while OpenAI has favored a less restrictive approach. However, the gap between the two companies has recently narrowed. OpenAI has begun supporting tougher safeguards as the industry faces concerns over hacking incidents and potentially harmful or unexpected behavior from advanced AI models.
