Spotify is introducing a new label for AI-generated artists after months of requests from users who wanted greater transparency around artificial intelligence on the platform.
Starting in mid-September, Spotify will begin displaying an “AI Persona” badge on certain artist profiles. The label will indicate that an artist’s identity may have been created using AI and does not represent a real person.
The move follows growing criticism from listeners as AI-generated songs, fictional bands, and artificial performers have become increasingly common across music streaming platforms. Spotify users have also complained about AI-generated tracks appearing in personalized playlists and recommendations without clearly identifying their origins.
Spotify said the new badge is designed to prevent situations where listeners encounter an artist profile that appears to represent a real musician before discovering that the identity is AI-generated.
Profiles that voluntarily identify themselves as AI Personas can receive the badge, while Spotify said it will also apply the label to other relevant profiles it identifies.
The company is also changing how these artists appear in recommendations. Music from accounts labeled as AI Personas will generally be excluded from personalized recommendations unless a user has chosen to follow AI-generated artists.
The changes come as AI music continues to gain traction, with some artificial artists attracting millions of streams and even securing major record deals. Spotify has previously introduced verification features for human artists as it attempts to make the distinction between real and AI-generated performers clearer for listeners.
