Subway is turning a major astronomical event into a bold marketing stunt, offering free food for a year to anyone who can find a real meteorite.

The campaign is tied to the Lyrid Meteor Shower, which peaks on April 21. While most people watch for shooting stars, Subway is encouraging fans to go a step further—actually locating a meteorite that survives impact.

Under the promotion, the first person to find and scientifically verify a Lyrid meteorite can win what the brand calls a “finder’s free,” earning free Subway until the meteor shower returns in April 2027. Participants must submit proof of their discovery and have it confirmed by a scientific institution.

The campaign plays on growing public interest in meteor sightings, especially after recent reports of fireballs and sonic booms across the US. While finding a meteorite is extremely rare, it’s not impossible—making the challenge both unlikely and intriguing.

Subway is using the moment to promote its new menu items, turning a rare cosmic event into a high-risk, high-attention giveaway designed to capture public curiosity.
