Charles Smith, a TikTok influencer known online as Wolfie Kahletti and Wolfie Party, has been sentenced to one year in prison for spraying pesticide on fresh produce and rotisserie chicken at a Walmart in Mesa, Arizona, as part of a so-called prank video.
The incident happened on December 19, 2023, at the Walmart on South Stapley Drive and Baseline Road. According to police reports, the 27-year-old Smith entered the store, grabbed a can of Hot Shot Ultra Bed Bug & Flea Killer, and filmed himself laughing while spraying it over fruits, vegetables, and cooked chickens. He posted the video on TikTok and Instagram, quickly sparking outrage.
Though he later deleted the original video, Smith uploaded follow-up clips claiming the food was thrown away immediately. However, surveillance footage showed he returned about ten minutes later, loading the contaminated items into a shopping cart and pushing it to another part of the store. Police noted this delay posed a real risk that customers could have unknowingly purchased the tainted food.
Walmart removed $931 worth of food and thoroughly cleaned the affected area. Company spokesperson Kelsey Bohl condemned the act, stating: “We’re disgusted by what happened at our Mesa store. Social media pranks like this cannot be tolerated. The health and safety of our customers and associates is always a top priority.”
Smith was identified through surveillance and prior police encounters. He turned himself in to Mesa Police two days later, admitting he stole the pesticide and used it for social media “trolling.” He also had an open case with Tempe Police and an active warrant for failing to appear in court.
He ultimately pleaded guilty to three charges: adding poison or a harmful substance to food, criminal damage, and solicitation to commit burglary.
On June 24, 2024, he was sentenced to one year in prison, with credit for 136 days already served.
