President Donald Trump has warned he would impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian exports to the US if Canada moves forward with a trade deal with China. In a post on Truth Social, Trump cautioned Prime Minister Mark Carney against turning Canada into a gateway for Chinese goods entering the US market, arguing such a move would trigger severe economic consequences.
Trump claimed that deeper trade ties with Beijing would harm Canada’s economy and way of life, accusing China of seeking to exploit the country. His remarks followed Carney’s recent visit to China, the first by a Canadian leader since 2017, where he met with President Xi Jinping to discuss expanding trade, investment, and cooperation in sectors including energy and agriculture.
After the visit, Canada and China said they had agreed to boost bilateral trade and investment. Carney also announced plans to allow up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into Canada at a reduced tariff rate, while expecting China to lower tariffs on Canadian canola.
Trump’s warning marks a shift in tone after initially signaling support for the deal. The exchange comes amid broader tensions, with both leaders trading sharp remarks during appearances at the World Economic Forum in Davos, underscoring growing strains in global trade and geopolitics.
