Waymo is recalling 3,871 robotaxis across the US after a software flaw allowed some vehicles to enter active freeway construction zones.

The issue was linked to 13 incidents in Phoenix and the San Francisco Bay Area during April and May. In several cases, Waymo vehicles failed to recognize road closure signs or drove through lane closure barriers, entering areas with ongoing construction work.

The company said no crashes or injuries were reported. Waymo has already restricted certain freeway operations and is rolling out software updates while working on a permanent solution.

This marks Waymo’s second recall of 2026. In May, the company recalled vehicles after a robotaxi drove into a flooded roadway in Texas. Overall, it is the sixth recall issued for Waymo’s autonomous fleet.

Federal regulators are also investigating a separate January incident in which a Waymo vehicle struck a child near a school in California.
