Wikipedia has rolled out a new policy banning AI-generated text from being used to write or rewrite articles on its English-language platform.
The decision comes after ongoing debate within the community over how to handle large language models and concerns about accuracy and reliability.
Under the new rules, contributors cannot use AI to create article content, but limited use is still allowed for editing and translation. Editors can refine their own writing with AI tools, provided the output is carefully reviewed, and can use AI for initial translations as long as they verify and correct the final text.
The policy reflects growing concern that AI-generated content may introduce errors or distort meaning, while also acknowledging the difficulty of detecting such content. Other language versions of Wikipedia may adopt different approaches.
