A Minnesota woman who spent years collecting more than 1,000 copies of Wedding Crashers is now leaving hundreds of them inside Little Free Libraries around Minneapolis.
Sable Adelaide’s unusual collection began when she discovered 25 copies of the 2005 comedy at a secondhand store for just 25 cents each. She bought all of them for $6.25, filled a shelf with the identical DVDs and used it as a joke on her roommate.
But the joke quickly became a much bigger project. Adelaide decided to collect 1,000 copies and began sharing updates online. Strangers soon joined in, mailing her their own DVDs. The response became so large that she eventually opened a P.O. Box just for the collection.
One contributor from Poland reportedly sent between 40 and 70 copies at a time. By the time Adelaide reached her goal, she had accumulated roughly 1,200 copies.
She celebrated by organizing a screening of Wedding Crashers at the Fargo Theater. Surprisingly, it was the first time she had actually watched the movie — and she discovered she wasn’t much of a fan.
After moving from Fargo to Minneapolis, storing more than a thousand DVDs became difficult. Adelaide initially tried selling them before finding a more unusual solution: distributing them through Little Free Libraries.
Traveling around Minneapolis on her longboard, she placed hundreds of copies in 19 different libraries, sometimes leaving 20 to 30 DVDs in a single box.
Adelaide described the project as an art installation and said her goal was ultimately simple: give people in the community something unexpected to smile about.
