X has eliminated the “Dim” theme from its web platform, removing the bluish-gray option that sat between the white Default mode and the black Lights Out setting.
Originally launched in 2016 as Night Mode and renamed in 2019, Dim provided a softer background alternative. As of the February 12 web update, it is no longer available on desktop, though it remains accessible on iOS and Android.
Responding to user complaints, Head of Product Nikita Bier said the company currently does not have the capacity to support more than two color themes. He noted the team is reviewing feedback and considering adjustments to the black background, but gave no timeline.
The explanation triggered confusion online, with some users questioning why a major platform cannot maintain a third theme. Others raised concerns about eye strain from pure black OLED displays, especially during nighttime use.
The change had been hinted at earlier. In 2023, Elon Musk mentioned plans to remove Dim after acquiring the company. Light mode was also considered for removal at the time but was kept following backlash.
For now, the update only affects the web version. While browser extensions can recreate a similar look, it remains unclear whether Dim will eventually disappear from mobile as well.
