Xiaomi has just announced that it received over 200,000 genuine orders for its new YU7 electric SUV in just three minutes after sales opened. And these aren’t just casual sign-ups—buyers put down a ¥5,000 (~$700) deposit that becomes non-refundable in just a few days. By the end of the first hour, orders had skyrocketed to nearly 300,000! With an average sale price hovering around USD 40,000, Xiaomi racked up an impressive ~$8 billion in sales almost overnight.
The YU7 marks Xiaomi’s second foray into the automotive world, following the SU7 sedan, which sold about 260,000 units in its debut year. Marketed as a “Tesla killer,” the YU7 comes in at a lower price point than Tesla’s updated Model Y while offering some impressive specs. The lineup features:
- Standard RWD (~ $35,300): 235 kW, 528 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 5.88 seconds.
- Pro AWD (~$39,000 USD): 365 kW, 690 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 4.27 seconds.
- Max AWD (~ $46,000): 508 kW, 866 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 3.23 seconds, with a top speed of 253 km/h.
Battery options include a 96.3 kWh pack (835 km CLTC range) and a 101.7 kWh pack for the AWD models, with ultra-fast charging that adds 620 km of CLTC range in just 12 minutes.
Inside, the YU7 features a nearly 5-meter body packed with tech-savvy features: double-pane acoustic glass, an electro-shading sunroof, a full-width heads-up display, NVIDIA Thor chips for smart driving, and seamless integration with the Xiaomi ecosystem, even letting you control your air conditioning or robot vacuum from the car.
Xiaomi has already kicked off production, promising quick delivery for preset configurations. With orders pouring in and Tesla already slashing prices in China, the launch of the YU7 signals a significant shift in the EV market—and it’s clear that Xiaomi’s ambitions in the EV space are serious, marking a bold new chapter in its tech empire.
