YouTube adds mobile timestamps, but with limits

YouTube is rolling out a new mobile feature that lets users share videos starting from a specific timestamp, while gradually moving away from its existing Clips tool.

The new “Share at Timestamp” option, previously available on desktop, is now coming to mobile, allowing users to send a video that begins at an exact moment without needing to edit or trim it.

As part of the update, YouTube is scaling back the role of Clips. While older clips will still be viewable, users will lose features like setting custom start and end times or adding descriptions to shared segments.

The shift is part of YouTube’s broader effort to simplify how users highlight and share moments, making timestamped links the default method.

Separately, YouTube continues to expand its “Video Clips” tool in YouTube Studio, with plans to integrate it into Shorts and introduce AI-driven suggestions to help creators find the most shareable moments in their content.
